A Birthday Wish For Dumbo

Dear Dumbo,

I haven’t known you for a long time. I was not even a part of this Earth when you were born. In fact, I think this is the first birthday of yours since we met. So I thought I’ll make it special and write you this open letter.

Thank you for being the sweet person you are. You are kind and selfless in a world that is anything but that. Even when people hurt you with their words and actions, you never hold grudges and never mean them any harm in return. They may tell you it is your weakness, but it truly is your strength. You are ever ready to help, ever ready to please asking for nothing in return save, maybe, love and care. If there were more people like you, the world would be a much better place. To seek affection, and to want to be accepted is not to be needy or soft hearted, it is to be normal. It is the ones who refuse it to you that are the real problem. You feel you are not perfect, that you do not fit in. I know people tease you about your ways, because you are different, but always remember that being distinct is what makes you unique. You may not have all the abilities that the world seeks of you, but you do have the ones that make a difference to those closest to you, and to yourself.

And dear, never ever forget that you can fly. Within you lies the power to achieve all you want, to conquer heights that the ones who teased you and ostracised you never will. Be yourself, always, because you truly are the best of creations.

Dumbo came into being 75 years ago on Oct 23, 1941, based upon the storyline by Helen Aberson. Born as a baby elephant with enormous ears leading to him being cruelly teased by almost everyone in the circus troop, he later realizes that their large size lets him fly. It is an endearing tale that almost anyone can relate to. In spite of being one of  Disney’s shortest feature films, it was apparently Walt Disney’s favourite. And now mine too.
