Fantastic opening to a novel – one of the all-time greats, along with Pride and Prejudice and Moby Dick.

I have not read unabridged versions of the other two. But Lolita, yes. I casually opened the page and those first three sentences had me hooked. My friend who recommended the book called it a literary orgasm. The writing is simply stunning.

It’s one of those precious times when you can read a novel and legitimately say to yourself “this is a piece of art”
